This family opted to do their family photos at a VRBO that they rented which also had access to a beach. We did a mix of photos at the house, and on the beach, and even ended with a splash as everyone jumped into the pool.
We did a mix of large group photos, photos of each family, individuals of the kids as well as photos with Mom and Dad and the grandkids. An hour session allows for this diversity of groupings as well as doing walks down the beach.
